Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms such as viruses or bacteria that are carried in blood and can cause disease in people. There are many different bloodborne pathogens including malaria, syphilis, brucelloses, Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), herpes, E.coli, hantavirus and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) to name a few. Bloodborne pathogens can and do live in dried blood for weeks, some scientist have proven them to live in dried blood for more than a month!

    As we stated, bloodborne pathogens are diseases carried in blood that can harm, infect and kill. Over the last 25 years, we have experienced a heightenend awareness of bloodborne diseases with the discovery of HIV and it's affect on our world. We no longer think of blood or body fluids as just a mess to clean up but more of a material that can be harmful if not handled properly by licensed trained professionals.

    Pathogens can also exist in the air, these are called Airborne pathogens. Stirring up dust, grime and gross filth that has been infested by rats / rodents over a length of time can lead to a hazardous environment with untrained or unknowing people breathing in the minute airborne viruses such as Hantivirus.
